- Admit you are a sinner (i.e. have disobeyed God and broken His laws) "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." Romans 3:23
- Realize that it is your sin that separates you from God. "Behold, the Lord's hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; nor his ear heavy, that it cannot hear. But your iniquities have separated you from God." Isaiah 59:1-2
- Recognize that even your good deeds or moral acts are not enough to merit Gods salvation. "But we are all like an unclean thing, And all our rightousnesses are like filthy rags." Isaiah 64:6
- Understand that sin brings with it an awful pricetag. "For the wages of sin is death." Romans 6:23
- Therefore, repent (grieve over and turn away) from your sins. Jesus said, "But unless you repent you will all likewise perish." Luke 13:3
- When you do, God promises to remove your sin. "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousnes." 1 John 1:9
- This forgiveness is possible because Jesus paid the price for your sin with His death on the cross. "But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." Romans 5:8, Isaiah 53:5-6, Hebrews 9:22, 28
- Now salvation is offered to you as a gift. "But the gift of God is eternal life." Romans 6:23
- By gift, I mean that it is not something that has to be earned. "For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast." Ephesians 2:8-9
